The first-ever TBM deployed in Laos has achieved breakthrough at the Theun Hinboun Expansion project.
In late November 2010, Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna celebrated the breakthrough of a 7.6m (25.1ft) diameter Robbins Single Shield TBM for a 5.5km headrace tunnel on the Nam Theun River.
The machine broke through on November 21 into an exit shaft close to the intake structure on the river. About 40 people from the Lao Government, CMC, and local media were on hand to witness the event.
